I affirm, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily. —1 Corinthians 15:31 NKJV
That old ego is the chief enemy of love, joy, peace, and righteousness. Believers are always fully righteous in God’s sight through the gift of Christ’s righteousness but the ego is still lurking, waiting to manifest itself and bring suffering to ourselves and others.
We need to watch and pray continually for there are so many ways that the ego expresses itself. We need to “die daily” to the self-centered part of our nature (see Romans 7:14-25). We will always need both the forgiving and enabling grace of God to be victorious over the wiles of the enemy.
I find that it is so important to be open to the work of the Holy Spirit and to accept the revelations of ongoing changes that need to be made in my life, especially in my relationships with others. The way we treat others is the ultimate test of the genuineness of our faith journey.
Our imperfect behavior is not to be a “guilt trip” kind of thing for in Christ we are acceptable to God. However, as our love for the Savior grows we indeed want to be more like Him in our everyday life. Since we are declared righteous in Christ we want to express our love for Him by living righteously. This is not to gain favor with God but because we already have His favor and live in the sunshine of His love.
