Inspiring Story: Bringing Hope To An Impoverished Community – Kalungu, Uganda
Mar 24, 2017 1990
Every six months, GNU’s Pr Bonifresh and a group of friends come together for two weeks to do evangelism through serving a chosen community. He describes how they have spent these two weeks recently:
We identified the village of Kalungu as our target. Because we wanted to make the most of our time, we decided to camp at the venue, specifically the home of one village elders who happens to be a Gospel sympathizer.
We arrived in the afternoon. The following day, after eating our breakfast and saying our prayers, we descended on the village in pairs, armed with bibles and songbooks. Our goal was not to convert the residents to any specific denomination but simply to deliver the Good News of salvation by grace alone. We prayed for the sick and taught them key Bible principles. We helped the sick and the elderly in the community by assisting in household chores such as fetching water from the well and gathering firewood.
In particular, there was an old woman who lived alone in a shanty house. After seeing the deplorable conditions in which she lived, our team decided to intervene. We resolved to sacrifice both our money and energy and build a safe structure for her. In addition to this, we purchased bedding for her. Then we asked one of the neighbors to keep a close eye on her and update us by phone if anything was needed. We called this WWJD (What Would Jesus Do).
On the last day, village children came to bid us goodbye and we had a nice farewell of prayers and songs. This will happen again next year. Although we don’t have many means, we know that Jesus is not shared through word alone, but through serving in love as well.
