But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus. – Matt 17:7–8

looking-at-clouds11We’ve all been through those experiences – when life doesn’t turn out the way we think it should – when you come face to face with a reality that makes no sense to you at all – when you don’t know if you are going to land on your feet. Sometimes its tragedy, sometimes it’s the results of our own stupidity, sometimes it’s just realizing that we were wrong all along… and sometimes it’s coming to grips that we are not in control.

The three friends, Peter, James and John, had just been through that experience. They had seen Moses and Elijah with Jesus shining in glory. They had heard the voice of God announcing that Jesus was his Son whom he loves and to whom all are to listen.

And faced with an experience like that, they do what every single one of us would do – they are afraid. In fact they fall face-down to the ground, terrified.

But it is Jesus who makes all the difference. He comes to where they are, shaking on the ground, and he touches them with the tenderness of hands that will one day bear the nails for them. He says to them, “Get up. Don’t be afraid.”

And when they looked up from the ground, they saw Jesus only.

Jesus is the circuit-breaker. He is always the circuit-breaker. Jesus is the one who makes sense of everything, who gently raises us back onto our feet. If you have Jesus, you have all you need. And you will never be afraid again.

Look up, and see no one except Jesus.
