Pay Attention to Jesus
Aug 16, 2025 5
[1] Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. [2] For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, [3] how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, [4] while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. Hebrews 2:1–4 (ESV)
We’ve spent the last five days seeing the glory of angels and the far greater glory of Jesus. Hebrews now moves from showing us who Jesus is to warning us about what happens if we ignore Him.

The word “therefore” in verse 1 is key. Because Jesus is greater than the angels in every way, we must “pay much closer attention to what we have heard.” The gospel message — the good news of who Jesus is and what He has done — demands our full attention.
If we stop paying attention to Jesus, we risk drifting away from Him. Drifting is often slow and subtle. It can happen when we neglect God’s Word, pull back from gathering with His people, or let other voices and priorities take His place.
Verse 2 reminds us that the Law — a message delivered by angels — was reliable, and breaking it carried serious consequences. Verse 3 argues from the lesser to the greater: if ignoring God’s message through angels brought judgment, how much more will we be held accountable if we neglect “such a great salvation” brought by His Son?
This salvation was first declared by the Lord Jesus Himself. It was confirmed by those who heard Him, the apostles. And God bore witness to it with signs, wonders, miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit. This message could not be more certain or more urgent.
Neglecting it is not just unwise — it is eternally dangerous. But paying attention to Jesus is life-giving. He is the anchor that keeps us from drifting and the Saviour who brings us safely home as we trust in his perfect life, sacrificial death, and triumphant resurrection.
Reflection:
Ask God to help you pay close attention to Jesus today. Confess any signs of drift in your life and thank Him for the secure salvation He has given you in Christ.
