Responding to God’s Final Word: Listen, Look, Love
Aug 9, 2025 22693
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. (Hebrews 1:1–4 ESV)
When God has spoken fully and finally in His Son, the right response is not to sit back, but to lean in. Hebrews 1 doesn’t just inform us; it calls us to action.
The first way to respond is to Listen. Turn the volume down on the competing voices and turn the volume up on His. Make a daily habit of hearing from Him in Scripture. Not just on Sundays. Not just when you feel like it. Every day, open the Bible and hear the living voice of Christ. But standing on the Word of God is never easy. Throughout history, the Bible has been under pressure — from both outside the church and from within it. False teaching, moral compromise, cultural drift, spiritual apathy. Over and over again, the same old question gets whispered: “Did God really say?”

Second, Look. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus. Don’t waste energy chasing after new revelations, mystical experiences, or “fresh words” that go beyond Scripture. You already have everything you need in Him. Keep looking to the One who is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact imprint of His nature.
Third, Love. As you listen and look, let your affection for Christ grow. Think of Lucy with Aslan in The Chronicles of Narnia — the more she grew, the bigger she saw him to be. That’s what happens when we walk closely with Jesus. The more we know Him, the more we love Him.
These three responses feed each other. Listening fuels looking. Looking stirs love. And love keeps you listening.
Jesus is the Better Prophet — so listen to Him.
Jesus is the Better King — so look to Him.
Jesus is the Better Priest — so love Him for the cross.
Whatever the pressures, whatever the noise, whatever the cost, keep listening, keep looking, and keep loving Christ.
Reflection
