Hearts Burning on the Road to Emmaus – Luke 24:32

Have you ever felt like you’d lost sight of Jesus? Walk with two disciples on the road to Emmaus and discover what happens when a stranger opens their eyes — and hearts — to the Scriptures.
“Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?” — Luke 24:32 (NLT)

One of my favourite stories in Scripture took place on the road to Emmaus. Two followers of Jesus were walking home feeling forlorn, sad and confused. They thought they had lost Jesus. Their hope seemed gone — or so they thought.
Then a stranger joined their conversation.
As they walked together, He guided them through the Scriptures, beginning with the writings of Moses and explaining all the passages that pointed to Himself. Although they did not yet recognise Him, something was happening deep within them. Their hearts began to burn as the Scriptures were opened to them.
Everything changed. The same disciples who had been weighed down with sorrow were transformed with fresh hope and joy. So great was their excitement that they immediately walked miles back through the darkness to Jerusalem to share the good news that Jesus was alive.
What about us? Where do we turn when we feel disconnected from Jesus? Do we allow our circumstances to interpret Scripture, or do we allow Scripture to interpret our circumstances?
The Good News Is…
The good news is that the Emmaus story reminds us that when Jesus seems distant, one of the most important things we can do is return to the Scriptures that reveal Him. As we prayerfully open God’s Word, the Holy Spirit can once again warm our hearts with the presence, promises and person of Christ.
