Verse 12 is the foundation of everything. All the new covenant promises – the law written on hearts, the personal knowledge of God – rest on this one truth: “For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.”
Complete Forgiveness
God doesn’t just overlook sin. He doesn’t ignore it or sweep it under the rug. He deals with it completely through the sacrifice of Jesus.
And once dealt with, he remembers it no more.
When God “remembers” sin in the Old Testament, it means he acts in judgment against it. But when he promises not to remember, he’s saying: I will not hold this against you. Ever.
Not partial forgiveness. Not conditional forgiveness. Complete forgiveness.
The Old Is Obsolete
Verse 13 draws the conclusion: “In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete.”
God himself declared it. The old covenant has served its purpose. It pointed forward to Jesus. And now that Jesus has come, the old way is done.
Obsolete. Like VHS tapes and cassette players. Not just outdated, but no longer needed.
Why? Because the new covenant delivers what the old could only promise. The old required endless sacrifices. The new gives one perfect sacrifice. The old depended on human faithfulness. The new rests on God’s faithfulness.
The Good News Is…
Your sins are not just forgiven – they’re remembered no more! Isn’t that extraordinary? Through Jesus’ once-for-all sacrifice, God has dealt with your guilt completely and permanently.
You don’t have to wonder if you’ve done enough. You don’t have to keep offering sacrifices or striving to make yourself acceptable. Jesus has done it all.
The old way is obsolete. The new and better way is Jesus. And in him, you are forgiven, secure, and known by God.
Reflection
What sin or guilt are you still carrying that God has promised to remember no more? Today, trust in the finished work of Jesus and rest in the complete forgiveness of the new covenant.
