The God Who Speaks: Hearing His Voice in Hebrews 1:1

“Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets…” (Hebrews 1:1 ESV)

God is a speaking God. The very first page of the Bible shows His powerful word — “And God said…” — and creation burst into life. He speaks, and galaxies form. He speaks, and light shines in the darkness.

But He hasn’t just spoken to bring the world into being. From the beginning, He has spoken so His people could know Him. In the Old Testament, God spoke at many times and in many ways — to Abraham under the stars, to Moses from a burning bush, to Elijah in a whisper. He spoke through prophets like Isaiah and Jeremiah. And sometimes in surprising ways — even speaking through a donkey to get someone’s attention!

Every time, His word was clear, purposeful, and personal. And every time, it called for a response.

The writer of Hebrews begins by reminding us: this is the God we worship — the God who takes the initiative to reveal Himself. He is not aloof or silent. He speaks in ways we can understand.

And that hasn’t changed. Yes, He spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but today we have His written word — the Bible. Every time you open it, you are hearing the voice of the living God.

The problem isn’t that God hasn’t spoken — it’s that other voices are often louder. The noise of culture. The pull of temptation. Even our own doubts. But unlike those voices, God’s word is life‑giving and trustworthy.

So don’t take it for granted. Don’t let it gather dust. Open it. Read it. Let it shape your thinking, your decisions, your heart. And when you hear His voice — respond.

Reflection:

Thank God that He is not silent. Ask Him to help you hear and heed His word. Open Hebrews 1:1–4 and read it slowly. Remember — the Creator of the universe speaks, and He is speaking to you.
