You may not be known for your genius ideas, or applauded for your performance on the world’s stage. You may not be known for having climbed the grandest career ladder, or for having the biggest house on the block. You may not be on the Forbes 500 list, nor indeed be defined as successful by most secular standards. But you might be known for your kindness, your compassion, your gentleness, your self-control or your sense of humour. All of these are just different ways of being known for being a loving Christian.
If you want to know what the most important things in life are go to 1 Corinthians, 13. There you will find three things about life that trump everything else. What are they? After the race only three stand on the podium worthy of medals: faith, hope and love. Love is the emblem emblazoned on the gold medal humbly worn by every Christian who has taken time to get to know Jesus Christ. Three things remain, but the greatest of these is love!
As believers in Christ, we have access to the fruit of the Holy Spirit in our spirits. What a feast awaits, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (See Galatians 5:22-23). This means we have everything we need, in Christ, to live a joyful life. There is no higher index of success than that you love the Lord your God and your neighbour as yourself.
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. John 13:34
