The Tragedy of Javiet
My daughter gave me a wonderful birthday present not long ago! She took me to see the musical Les Misérables in Brisbane. What an amazing experience!
I was particularly struck by the character of Javert. Here is a man who has lived a good life, and remained true to his principles, which are based on a thorough religious morality. He is so religious, that he refuses to bend before grace. He doesn’t allow himself to be forgiven, and as a result, he refuses to forgive others.
So, because Javert will not forgive, he takes the path of self-destruction.
There’s many people, who, in case there is a God, are planning to plead that they lived a good enough life.
But Javert shows us that being “good” is not enough. Could it be that the tragedy of Javert is an almost universal one? Because there is a new world beyond the barricades: a world of mercy, forgiveness, and grace.
There is a new world beyond the barricades: a world of mercy, forgiveness and grace.
