The True and Better Man – Hebrews 2:9

“But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.” (ESV)
Here is the turning point. Psalm 8 showed us the dignity of humanity, but also the reality that things are not the way they should be. And now verse 9 says, “But we see Jesus…”
That changes everything.

Jesus was made lower than the angels for a little while — he took on flesh and blood, he became fully human. Unlike us, he lived completely in obedience to his Father. Where we declared independence from God, he walked in dependence on God. Where we failed, he succeeded.
And how was he crowned with glory and honour? Not by avoiding suffering but through it. Verse 9 says, “crowned with glory and honour because of the suffering of death.” His pathway to glory was through the cross. The way up was the way down. He humbled himself, he took our place, and he bore our sin and shame.
And he did it for us. Verse 9 ends, “so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.” That’s the good news of the gospel. Jesus didn’t just die as a victim of injustice. He died as a substitute. He tasted death so that we don’t have to face it in the same way. Physical death will still come, but he has already borne the eternal judgment we deserve.
This is why we can take our shame to Jesus. He knows what it is to be human. He knows what it is to suffer. He knows what it is to die. But unlike us, he came out the other side victorious. And now he is crowned with glory and honour. He is the true and better man — the one Psalm 8 was always pointing towards.
Reflection
Where we failed, Jesus succeeded. He tasted death for you, and now he is crowned with glory and honour. Bring your shame to him today — he has carried it already.
