The Unbreakable Oath – Hebrews 7:20–22

[20] And it was not without an oath. For those who formerly became priests were made such without an oath, [21] but this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to him: “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest forever.’” [22] This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant. God’s Word Isn’t Going Anywhere
Human words can be fickle. We make promises and break them, we swear commitment and drift. But when God swears an oath, He binds it to His unchanging character.
The old priests came and went – appointed by command, replaced by death. But Jesus was appointed by oath. The Father declared once and for all, “You are a priest forever.” That oath sealed Jesus’ ministry and made it unshakably permanent.
This means your confidence in Christ isn’t based on your faithfulness, but on His Father’s promise. You can take great comfort knowing that God doesn’t change His mind.
The Guarantor of a Better Covenant
Verse 22 says, “This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant.”
A guarantor is someone who ensures the promise holds. For instance, when parents act as guarantors for their kids buying a first home, they put their own name, credit, and resources on the line to ensure the debt is covered.
That’s what Jesus has done for us. He doesn’t just co-sign the covenant – He fulfils it in full. His own life stands behind every promise of God.
The old covenant depended on human obedience and priestly rituals. The new covenant depends entirely on Jesus – His perfect obedience, His once-for-all sacrifice, and His never-ending resurrection life. That’s why this covenant is better: it can’t be broken, because it doesn’t depend on us.
The Good News Is…
When doubt creeps in and your faith feels fragile, remember this: your salvation isn’t hanging by a thread – it’s anchored to the oath of God and the life of Christ.
Jesus doesn’t just offer forgiveness; He secures it. He doesn’t just open the way; He guarantees it.
Every promise of God finds its “yes” in Him.
So even when your grip slips, His never does. The Father has sworn it, and the Son has sealed it forever.
Reflection
What promises do you tend to doubt when life feels uncertain?
Ask the Father to remind you that every word He has spoken is safe in Jesus, the unbreakable guarantor of a better covenant.
