There’s Power In The Blood – Hebrews 9:11-14

Hebrews 9:11-14

[11] But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) [12] he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. [13] For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, [14] how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God. Everything changed when Christ appeared.

The contrast is stunning. The old system required the blood of goats and calves, year after year. But verse 12 says Jesus entered the heavenly sanctuary once for all by means of his own blood, securing eternal redemption.

Not temporary, but eternal. Not external, but internal. Not repeated, but once for all.

The Day of Atonement

To understand what Jesus accomplished, we need Leviticus. Once a year, on the Day of Atonement, Israel’s sin was dealt with. The high priest took two goats without blemish.

The first goat was killed. Blood, blood, blood everywhere. Sacrificed in Israel’s place, taking the penalty for their sin.

The second goat was the scapegoat. The high priest placed his hands on its head, confessed Israel’s sin upon it, and it was led into the wilderness to die. Sin is removed and taken away.

Both goats pointed forward to Jesus.

Jesus Is the Lamb Without Blemish

Jesus is the only one without sin. The lamb without blemish. The innocent one. He lived the perfect life.

When Jesus laid down his life, his blood was shed like that first goat – dying in our place, the death we deserve.

And like that second goat, it’s like our hands were placed upon Jesus’ head. Our sin, guilt, shame, contaminated consciences, the punishment we deserve – all placed upon him. And he takes it away.

As far as the east is from the west, so God has removed our sin (see Psalm 103:12). At the cross, God’s anger at our sin was turned away from us as Jesus willingly took it upon himself.

How Much More

Verse 13: if the blood of goats and bulls provided external purification, verse 14 asks, “how much more will the blood of Christ… purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.”

Jesus’ blood purifies our conscience. Not just externally. Deep within.

Through the eternal Spirit, he offered himself without blemish to God. Perfect. Voluntary. Complete. Achieving what a thousand years of animal sacrifices never could—eternal redemption and a cleansed conscience.

The Good News Is…

The good news is that Jesus’ blood washes away your sin and cleanses your conscience once and for all. You don’t need religious rituals or good works. Jesus freely offers, through his blood shed on the cross, to cleanse you completely – your sin dealt with, your conscience purified, your eternal life secured.

And here’s the freedom: with a cleansed conscience, we’re freed from dead works to serve the living God, not out of guilt or fear, but with joy. Not trying to earn God’s approval, but knowing we already have it in Christ.

Stop striving. Start serving. Jesus has done it all.

Reflection

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you that Jesus’ blood has cleansed our consciences once and for all. Help us to walk in the freedom he has won for us – free from dead works, free to serve you with joy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
