Today, If You Hear His Voice – Hebrews 4:6–7
Sep 11, 2025 26
“Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, again he appoints a certain day, ‘Today,’ saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted, ‘Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.’” (ESV)

The Door Is Still Open
Verse 6 tells us what’s at stake: some failed to enter God’s rest because of disobedience. Israel heard God’s promises, but they did not combine them with faith. A whole generation fell short.
Yet the grace of God shines through: “it remains for some to enter it.” The door to God’s rest is still open.
The Urgency of Today
Notice the word repeated: Today. Written centuries after Israel’s wilderness failure, Psalm 95 still urged people to listen. And Hebrews tells us the same.
Every generation is summoned: Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts. Not yesterday. Not tomorrow. Today.
This is where procrastination is deadly. We think, I’ll deal with God later. I’ll take faith seriously one day. But Hebrews says there is no “one day” – only today.
A Soft Heart
The danger is not just out there in “the world.” It’s in here. Sin hardens our hearts. We grow dull to God’s Word. We tune out His voice.
So Hebrews urges us: keep your heart soft. Pray for tenderness. Ask God to make you responsive. Encourage one another daily so that no one is hardened by the deceitfulness of sin (Hebrews 3:13).
God is speaking to you through His Word… today! Are you listening?
Reflection:
What might it look like for you to respond to God’s voice today – not later, not someday, but right now?
