Unlimited: Anyone Who Believes

As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame” (Romans 10:11).

It is significant to see what the apostle Paul has to say about being unashamed in his letter. It is a theme to which he continues to return.

In Romans 1:16 he tells us that he is “not ashamed of the gospel”. The Gospel tells us that we are saved through faith in Jesus.

In Romans 5:5 Paul tells us that “hope does not put us to shame”. Our hope is our faith. Our hope is in Jesus.

The one who truly believes will profess his faith in Christ, and he will never be put to shame.

In Romans 9:33 Paul tells us that the one who believes in Jesus “will never be put to shame.” Here Paul is quoting Isaiah 28:16, regarding the foundation stone, who is Christ. No one will ever be lost who trusted in Jesus.

This point is so important that Paul now repeats the quote here in the tenth chapter.

In emphasising belief in Jesus, he is highlighting that what is most important is genuine trust, over merely the profession. The one who truly believes will profess his faith in Christ, and he will never be put to shame. This isn’t true for the one who simply professes but has no heart-faith in the Lord.

Spiritual Application

How deep is your trust in Jesus? As you try to answer that question for yourself, look back at the difficult events in your life. How did you respond in these times of trouble, and what did that reveal to you about your faith?
