Unlimited: Clothe Yourself with the Lord Jesus Christ
Sep 22, 2023 1061
Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh (Romans 13:14).
The image of being clothed is found frequently throughout the Bible as a metaphor for salvation.
Paul is telling us to symbolically put on Jesus, as you would put on your clothes. What does it mean to clothe yourself with Jesus? The prophet Isaiah wrote:
I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels (Isa. 61:10.)
Jesus gives us, as a free gift, his own pure and perfect clothes, to replace the moral reality of our own soiled and filthy rags.
Paul had earlier quoted Psalm 32:1–2 when he wrote:
Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord will never count against them (Rom. 4:7–8.)
That’s what it means to put on Christ, who covers your sin.
We do this by accepting, through faith, his gift of imputed righteousness. Jesus gives us, as a free gift, his own pure and perfect clothes, to replace the moral reality of our own soiled and filthy rags (Isa. 64:6). Now that we are sinless before God, we have entry into heaven and eternal life.
This was strikingly illustrated at the crucifixion of Jesus, when he gave his clothes to those who crucified him (Matt. 27:35.)
Spiritual Application
At the crucifixion, the soldiers used Jesus’ clothes as a game by gambling for them. In your life, how seriously do you take the gift of Christ’s garment of righteousness for our salvation?
Thank you for today’s word. The gift of Christ’s garment of righteousness is a perfect gift which cannot be toyed with. I will always cherish and adore Christ’s gift of garment of righteousness forever and ever. Glory be to his name.
