Unlimited: Condemnation for All

Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people (Romans 5:18a)

When the apostle Paul refers to Adam in this passage, he is referring to both of the original parents of the human race, “Adam and Eve.” They had been appointed by God to care for this world (Gen. 1:28.) They were, in effect its appointed rulers.

In disobeying God, they were choosing to rebel against God’s kingdom in this world and allowing another power to enter and rule: the power of sin and evil. It would be the same if, for example, the ruler of a nation chose to become a vassal state of another more powerful, but evil empire. This decision would apply to the entire nation and to future generations.

One trespass resulted in condemnation for all people.

The kingdom of the devil is a spiritual and moral kingdom of evil. First it corrupts morally, and then it corrupts materially. As a metaphor, we might say that when sin entered the world, it corrupted the moral DNA – the spiritual genetics – of Adam and Eve, and therefore all of their descendants.

As a result, through both nature and nurture, genetics and environment, we are tainted by sin from the depths of our being. We are fundamentally marked by selfishness and a moral inability to be and do good within us. Even the best of us fall far short of what we should be.

Spiritual Application

What are the clearest ways in which sin has marked your inner life? Make time and sit or walk in a peaceful, beautiful place, and surrender these aspects of your life to God.
