Or who has been his counselor?” (Romans 11:34b).
Referring to Christ, the prophet Isaiah wrote,
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isa 9:6).
Yet there are many people who set themselves up as Christ’s counsellor today. We like to counsel Jesus about how we think he should run the world or intervene in the lives of others.
In the gospels, Peter was always trying to be God’s counsellor. When Jesus told his disciples that he needed to go to Jerusalem and that he would be killed (Matt. 16:21), Peter took him aside and argued with him (v.22.)
Peter had to learn to accept that he needed to be led and counselled by Jesus and not the other way around.
Humanly speaking, his advice to Jesus was very good advice. However, when we try to counsel God, we are setting ourselves above him, in the position to which Satan aspired. That’s why Jesus called Peter “Satan” (v.23.)
Jesus had to allow Peter to experience the brokenness of his own fall, so that he could then lovingly restore Peter by the lake (John 21:15–23.) Peter had to learn to accept that he needed to be led and counselled by Jesus and not the other way around. He had to learn that Jesus was indeed the “Wonderful Counsellor.”
