Unlimited: Do What is Right

Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone (Romans 12:17b).

The first Christians presented a great conundrum to the Graeco-Roman world. On the one hand, their religion was viewed as highly suspicious. Yet on the other hand, no one could deny that the Christians were thoroughly good neighbours and friends. This is what Paul is telling us to do.

Paul isn’t telling us to simply do what other people would like us to do, or to conform to the expectations of our society. Paul is telling us to please God instead. We please God when we do what is right. And what is right will generally be approved of by others.

We please God when we do what is right.

This is a theme that appears frequently in Paul’s letters. He is always concerned for how believers will represent Christ in the eyes of the society around us. He continually urges us to avoid any activity or behaviour that would be considered dishonourable or reprehensible by society in general (2 Cor. 4:2; 8:21; 1 Tim. 3:7.) This includes, or course, any illegal activity, but also includes anything that society might condemn in general.

This has to do with the way in which a follower of Jesus will conduct their family relationships, business dealings, and their general conduct in the world, particularly when they are mistreated or suffer injury. In everything we are to represent what is good, noble, and pure.
