Unlimited: How Faith Comes

Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ (Romans 10:17).
The point that Paul is making here is that not all of Israel has believed the Gospel. As a result, they need faith to come into their lives. How do you develop faith? You develop faith by hearing the message about Jesus Christ.
Let’s not miss the vital point that Paul is making. The more you feed your mind with the message about Jesus, by which Paul means the Gospel, the more your faith will grow.
Faith doesn’t come through the intellectual study of Bible history, doctrines or prophecy. In fact, these things by themselves, and without Christ at their heart, can diminish and destroy faith. There is no life without the Gospel. This is why so many have studied the Bible over the centuries and have become narrow-minded and cruel in their attitudes toward others. It is because they sought faith but looked for it in the wrong way.
There is power only in the word about Christ. That’s how faith comes.
In my younger days, I was, sad to say, a legalist. I valued knowledge about the Bible above all things, even unknowingly, above the knowledge of Christ. I experienced a strange thing. Whenever I heard a Gospel sermon, particularly one which focused on the Cross of Christ, my eyes would fill with tears. I wondered why, but now I know.
There is power only in the Gospel. There is power only in the word about Christ.
That’s how faith comes.
