Unlimited: How the Promise Was Stated

For this was how the promise was stated: “At the appointed time I will return, and Sarah will have a son.” (Romans 9:9).

The Word of God matters, even in its details. That’s why Paul’s argument hinges on the wording of the promise that God gave to Abraham in Genesis 18:10.

Based on this, there are some important spiritual principles in how God fulfilled his promise to Abraham. As we look at this, remember that the promise that God gave Abraham about his son pointed to the greater promise of God’s own Son and the salvation that he would bring into the world.

The first principle is that God fulfils his promise at his appointed time, as Paul later told the churches in Galatia:

But when the right time came, God sent his Son… (Gal. 4:4.)

The promise that God gave Abraham about his son pointed to the greater promise of God’s own Son.

The second principle is that God fulfils his promise in his way, and not in the way we necessarily think that it should happen. Abraham thought that, given the circumstances of their advanced age, he knew how God would fulfil his promise that he would have a son. He tried, through different ill-conceived schemes, to bring God’s promise to pass. But God told him that the promised son would come through Sarah.

The third principle is that we are to wait patiently on the Lord to do what he has promised. Let us not do what Abraham did. We are not to rush ahead of God.

Spiritual Application

In what ways can you relate to these principles in your own life? Have you ever been frustrated with God’s timing? Have you ever wanted God to do things in the way you preferred? Have you ever rushed ahead of God? We have all done these things, haven’t we? What have we learnt from them?
