Unlimited: I Will Go to Spain

So after I have completed this task and have made sure that they have received this contribution, I will go to Spain and visit you on the way (Romans 15:28).

None of us knows the future, and the apostle Paul illustrates this well in this verse. He had already made his plans for the next few years, but his future was to be completely different to what he thought. So too it often will be with us.

In the 15th century, Thomas à Kempis wrote his book The Imitation of Christ in Latin, and a phrase within it which has lived on is “Homo proponit sed Deus disponit.” This is known in English as “Man proposes, but God disposes.”

“Man proposes, but God disposes.”

The wise king Solomon said,

Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails (Prov. 19:21.)

While we are called to be wise in the decisions we make in life, we must also always be ready to accept the Lord’s purpose for us, be it what it may. His will for us has an eternal purpose that it is possible we will never understand this side of eternity. We must always be ready to be led by the Lord, as he says,

Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say, “This is the way you should go,” whether to the right or to the left (Isa. 30:21, NLT.)

Spiritual Application

Are you allowing the Lord’s purpose to prevail in your life, even if it isn’t what you think you want?

God gave Solomon great wisdom, yet he still did not understand. Even when God took it all away, he did not get it. Ahoh
