Unlimited: Instructed by the Law
Aug 9, 2022 1036
if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law (Rom. 2:18.)
The Jewish people believed that they knew the will of God, but even beyond that, they thought they were the only ones who knew his will.
The Jewish people believed that they knew the will of God because they were the ones who knew and followed the law. As Paul says later in Romans:
…Theirs is… the covenants, the receiving of the law… (Rom. 9:4.)
They saw their lives as being instructed and led by the law.
It was a good thing to be instructed by the law, particularly in the time before the coming of the Saviour into the world. The apostle Paul wrote in his letter to the Galatians:
Therefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith (Gal 3:24, KJ21.)
If you are merely instructed by the law, you will live in the frustration of always knowing that you fall far short of God’s requirements.
The law was a means by which God had revealed his righteousness; however, it could never make us righteous.
However, if you are merely instructed by the law,
You know what he [God] wants; you know what is right… (Rom 2:18a, NLT)
but you will live in the frustration of always knowing that you fall far short of God’s requirements.
Spiritual Application
Have you ever been “instructed by the law,” giving the things you should do and the things you shouldn’t do the greatest priority in your life? What was your experience of this time? How can you help others who have that same mindset today?
