Unlimited: Reconciled and Saved!

For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! (Romans 5:10)

I used to think that this verse referred to two phases of salvation. What I used to believe was that the first part of our salvation was Christ’s death on the cross, and the second part was our progressively doing better at following Christ’s example of perfect righteousness. I thought that Romans 5:10 supported this understanding, because the “life” of Jesus here meant his perfect example, so we were reconciled through his death and saved through his perfect example of obedience to the law of God. I had to accept the first and followed the second, and then I would be saved.

The death and resurrection of Jesus, together, comprise the Cross – by which we are saved.

Now I know that that is purely anti-gospel legalistic heresy that denies the clear Biblical teaching of righteousness through faith. In Romans 5:10, the “life” of Christ refers simply to his resurrection, just as it does in the many other verses in Romans where Paul refers to both the death and the resurrection of Jesus. (You can see these two ideas being put together in verses such as Romans 4:25; 6:4: 6:9–10; 7:4; 8:34). In Romans 5:10, “life” means Christ’s resurrection.

The death and resurrection of Jesus, together, comprise the Cross – by which we are saved. Our salvation has nothing of human works in it.

Spiritual Application

Reflect on the question: How does the life of Jesus save you? How are you saved through his resurrection?
