Unlimited: Slaves No More
Jan 6, 2023 922
The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again (Romans 8:15a).
When we choose to serve God, he doesn’t accept us as slaves. He accepts us as his children. The apostle John tells us that,
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love (1 John 4:18).
The reality is that most people live their lives in fear, and it is tragic to realise that this is also true for many Christians. They don’t understand what it means to be led by the Spirit. You will never truly understand what it means to be led by the Spirit until you understand the character of God and the salvation that he has provided.
We are no longer slaves. Through the Spirit we are free!
When we were led by the flesh, we lived our lives in fear, whether we were aware of it or not. Fear of loss, of being abandoned, and fear of death lay behind our words, our actions, and our motivations. Christ has not redeemed us so that we will live in fear again, but in freedom, peace and joy.
We don’t cringe in fear when we think of God. We don’t live in anxiety and stress about whether we have done enough to please him. We don’t fear God’s judgment. All these things are what slaves do, but we are no longer slaves. Through the Spirit we are free!
Spiritual Application
This should give us cause for careful reflection. Is there any element of our reason for serving God that is motivated by fear? If there is, could it be that you have not received the fulness of the Spirit of God?
