Unlimited: The Second Coming of the Son of Man
Oct 17, 2024 2438
At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens (Mark 13:26–27, NIV).
This passage is the climax of Jesus’ prophecy. He responded to his disciples’ question about when the temple would be destroyed.
Jesus made it very clear that he hasn’t been just talking about the destruction of the temple but of his second coming and the end of the world. This is the culmination of history and the culmination of Jesus’ prophecy: the second coming of Christ.
Jesus Second Coming & The Prophecies of Daniel
Jesus had previously mentioned the prophecies of Daniel, and here, he is directly referring to Daniel again, specifically to the second coming of the Son of Man in Daniel 7. Daniel forms the framework for properly understanding the whole of Jesus’ great prophetic sermon.
Jesus often referred to himself as the Son of Man, and in this prophecy, he draws all the strands together. It is his own coming, as the Son of Man, that is the culminating event at the end of the world. If you read this in the context of Daniel 7, Jesus says that it is he himself who will vanquish God’s enemies and take the kingdoms of this world and that he will give the kingdom to his people.
Here is the climax of all prophecies of the end of the world: when the Son of Man returns to this world. It will be a wonderful day!
Notice that Jesus says he will gather his children “from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.”
What that means is that no one will be missed! This gives us all reason to be among the hopeful!

Eli’s Reflection: The question is, are you one of his? I encourage you to say a short prayer now and commit your life to him.
You are wrong Eli and it demonstrates that you like a lot of Christians don’t love your neighbour as yourself which is the second great commandment. Otherwise they would be doing everything in their power to warn the ‘wicked’ of the return of Jesus and their imminent destruction. We are not talking about ‘wickedness’ but people! God is a God of love and Jesus Christ will reign as King of kings and Lord of lords in his eternal kingdom.
The short answer is that yes, it will be a wonderful day. Both the destruction of wickedness and the glorification of the saved are works of God's love.
A great answer Eli. My real question is will the coming of the Son of Man be a wonderful day because the wicked are all destroyed and the righteous go to heaven. That is not inheriting the kingdom(s) of this world where Jesus Christ is Lord of Lords and King of Kings.
Hi Peter - The devotional doesn't imply anything about the final destiny of the righteous. Certainly the existing kingdoms of this world will all be destroyed, to be inherited by Christ and the saints (Rev 11:15). The saints will inherit the earth. This is a key promise of Scripture. However, the Bible also describes the saints as being in heaven. If you are asking whether the saved will be here or there, the reality is probably that ultimately we will inherit all things, as the Bible says, and whether we are in heaven or in the earth made new, it makes no difference.
GUD KNOWS EVERYTHING
Thank you for this devotional Eli. Does this mean that God’s people will inherit the kingdom of this world or go to heaven to spend eternity with Jesus? Blessings, Peter

Peter - I'm not sure what you are reacting against and why you are judging me as being "wrong." The ministry of Good News Unlimited, which I lead, is dedicated to sharing the Gospel with those who would otherwise be lost. If that is "wrong" then that is what I have staked my life on... on serving Jesus Christ. Let him judge me.
