Unlimited: The Grace of our Lord Jesus

The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you (Romans 16:20b).

The word “grace” is one of the most beautiful words in the Bible. The Greek root word for “grace” is “char,” which means “well-being.” From this root word comes many meanings, such as delight, kindness, beauty, favour, and thankfulness. These are all the connotations of the word “grace.”

In the Old Testament, grace has the idea of a stronger person who willingly steps in to help a weaker person, not because the help is deserved, but merely from a heart of love and compassion. In the New Testament, grace is always a freely given gift that originates from, and is given by, God. Having received grace from him, we can share it with others. Grace always depends on the giver, and not the receiver. Grace cannot be earned and cannot be deserved. If it were, it would cease to be grace.

Grace cannot be earned and cannot be deserved. If it were, it would cease to be grace.

Grace is one of the apostle Paul’s favourite words. His understanding of grace is anchored in the grace that he himself has received through Jesus. The first believers understood that it was through Jesus that God had revealed his grace to the world:

For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ (John 1:16–17, NASB.)

Spiritual Application

In one minute, on a sheet of paper (or on a computer screen), make a list of as many ways as you can think of that God has shown you grace. After the minute is up, take a look over your list. Now write down as many ways as you can think of in which you have shown grace to others in the last seven days. Be specific.

God has shown me years and years of Grace. I need to sit and think about His Grace. It's not something I have given a lot of thought to although I have often thought, "I live by His Grace ...' I somehow cannot separate His Grace from His Mercy and Compassion. His Grace has saved me from myself. Thank you Lord God.
