so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 5:21).
In Romans 5:17, Paul introduced the contrast between death reigning versus us reigning in life. He now returns to the concept of “reigning” and elaborates on how this happens.
In Romans 5:20 Paul has told us that where there was more sin, God’s grace super-abounded. God’s purpose in this is so that grace will reign in our life. It is through God’s grace that righteousness comes, and it is through righteousness that we have eternal life through Jesus Christ.
We reign in life because of the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ that brings eternal life. Because our standing with God changes, so too our experience of life changes. Now, the grace of God reigns in our lives, instead of sin.
The loving grace of God is the greatest life-transforming power in the universe.
The loving grace of God is the greatest life-transforming power in the universe. When you know these things, you can triumph over anything, can’t you!
But even this isn’t enough for the apostle Paul. He won’t stop until he centres every thought and every argument on the person of Jesus Christ and what he has done to save us. And so, the climax of this magnificent thought in Romans is that all of this comes through Jesus Christ our Lord. As a result of Christ being our Saviour, we also willingly accept him as the Lord of our lives.
