Unlimited: The Remnant Will Be Saved

Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: “Though the number of the Israelites be like the sand by the sea, only the remnant will be saved (Romans 9:27).

Paul is here quoting Isaiah 10:22, where the prophet Isaiah is alluding to God’s original promises to Abraham:

I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore (Gen. 22:17.)

Paul, in interpreting covenant prophecies to Israel, makes it clear that not all of physical Israel will receive the promises. Only a remnant will be saved. The reality that this remnant is a definite group, known by God, is emphasized by the use of the definite article in Greek: “the remnant.” The idea of a faithful remnant is one that is found throughout prophecy in the Bible.

The remnant will be saved.

These chapters in Paul’s epistle to the Romans are sometimes taken to mean that every individual Jew will be saved. These words show that this is clearly not the case. While Abraham’s descendants were to be blessed, it is important to understand that blessings of God as the world understands at any given point in time do not equal salvation. Heaven will be filled with people who had nothing in this life, while many who enjoyed earthly riches will be eternally lost. While the Jewish people received many blessings, not all were to form part of the remnant that “will be saved.”

Spiritual Application

Are you tempted to think of your material, health, or family blessings as a sign that you are right with God and that you are saved? What can you do to ensure that you are counted among God’s remnant?
