Unlimited: We Are God’s Children

The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children (Romans 8:16).
The apostle Paul now tells us about another important way in which we know that we are God’s children. It is because the Spirit of God himself assures us of it. If you are a child of God, then you know it, because of the experience of your walk with Christ. You will know that the Spirit of Christ is with you.
The risen Christ is no myth; his presence with us through his Spirit is no fiction. It isn’t just something you read about. It isn’t something that you simply know in a doctrinal sense. It is a reality which the child of God experiences.
We know that we are God’s children because the Spirit of God himself assures us of it.
Paul here refers to a deep inner experience, to what the Spirit of God, who is within us, testifies to us. Of course, the Spirit is able to tell us directly and personally. However, the Spirit also testifies to us in many different ways.
You must tune your inner ear to the Spirit. The things that happen to you are not coincidences; they are the testimony of the Spirit. You will experience the reality of the peace, assurance, and strength of his presence, not just a few moments every day, but often as you go about your day. This is the Spirit testifying with your spirit that you are a child of God.
Spiritual Application
Perhaps you have little children, or perhaps they are all grown up. Or perhaps you have none, and you will need to imagine them.
How would you treat your own little children when they disobey? How could you ever think that God would be less loving than you?
