Unlimited: We Belong to the Lord

If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord (Romans 14:8).

In Romans 12:5, the apostle Paul told us that none of us live for ourselves alone. We all live in relationship. We all belong to each other. However, here, the apostle tells us of a greater relationship that every follower of God is in. It is our relationship with Christ. This is a relationship that is above all.

Every person lives in relationship with each other, and ultimately everyone lives in some kind of relationship with God. Our relationships with each other, which we may call our “horizontal” relationships, are all directly dependent on our relationship with the Lord, which we may call the “vertical relationship.” If our relationship with the Lord is fruitful, so too will be our relationships with others. If our relationship with the Lord is in conflict, so too will be our relationships with others.

Whether we are alive or dead, we belong to the Lord.

The other wonderful principle here is that whether we are alive or dead, we belong to the Lord. It is simple to understand that we belong to the Lord when we are alive. But the striking point here is that even though Christians may die, they still belong to the Lord. We don’t stop being, and we never stop belonging to the Lord (John 10:27–28.)

Spiritual Application

In the life of a follower of Jesus, there is no separation between the holy and the secular, or between life and death. Everything we are is his. Everything we do, we do for him. Think of the rest of your day today, with all of its mundane activities. If they all belong to Christ, then how does that change your perspective of what you do in a typical day?

If only people could not separate the holy from the secular. What a different world we would live in.
