Unlimited: Worthless Thinking

For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened (Romans 1:21)

Although these words were written around 2000 years ago, they are a strikingly accurate description of our contemporary western world. Notice how the NIRV translates this verse,

They knew God. But they didn’t honor him as God. They didn’t thank him. Their thinking became worthless. Their foolish hearts became dark.

Our world has every reason to know God, yet it has largely turned to atheism. As a result the thinking of our world has become worthless.

It has become worthless in two ways. The thinking of the world has become worthless because it is based on the principles of scientific materialism which says that there is no God and all that exists is only matter. To try to explain the world it embraces the ideas of evolution. If you start with these wrong assumptions you will end up with wrong conclusions.

The thinking of the world has become worthless.

The thinking of this world is also worthless because it focuses on trivialities. We spend our lives in an endless question for some new way to entertain ourselves, while eternity hangs in the balance. We run around chasing butterflies while a tsunami is upon us. Trivialities consume our days.

There is ultimately no peace or lasting happiness in living in this way. There is only fulfilment in knowing God, and living lives of gratitude that give glory to him.

Spiritual Application

What do you spend your time thinking about? How much of your day is filled with worthless thoughts? What can you do to fill your thoughts more with Jesus?
