But what about the resurrection of the widow’s son, recorded in the seventh chapter of Luke? You see, the ministry of Jesus was bracketed by two resurrection miracles, one at the beginning of his ministry and one at the end. The resurrection of the widow’s only son at Nain set the tone and the theme for what Jesus was all about.

Luke 17 tells us that,

11 A little later Jesus went to a city called Nain. His disciples and a great crowd traveled with him. 12 As he approached the city gate, a dead man was being carried out. He was his mother’s only son, and she was a widow. A large crowd from the city was with her. 13 When he saw her, the Lord had compassion for her and said, “Don’t cry.” 14 He stepped forward and touched the stretcher on which the dead man was being carried. Those carrying him stood still. Jesus said, “Young man, I say to you, get up.” 15 The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother.

The village of Nain was in Galilee on the side of a high hill. To get there, you had to go up a steep track up from the valley below.

Back in Jesus’ day, people were buried in caves in the rock, and always outside the villages and towns. Even today, on the west side of the village the rock is full of funerary caves.

So Jesus had probably already gone past the tombs as he made his way up to the village, and the village gate was now in view. At that moment, a crowd surged out. It was a funeral procession for a widow’s only son.

Here is the point I want to you to see very clearly. When Jesus comes in, death comes out!

Death cannot be where Jesus is.

The village of “Nain” represents this world. It represents your life as God sees it. The word “Nain” means “beautiful.” That is the word that God spoke over this world when he had just made it. He stood back and looked at it with a sigh and a smile, and said, “It is good!” Beautiful. That’s is the word that God has spoken over your life.

But death came into this world and ruined everything. It has even touched your life in ways that you cannot even begin to imagine.

But now Jesus had come into the world. When Jesus comes in, death goes out. That evening in the little village called “Beautiful,” a widow and her only son had dinner together.

Right now, Jesus is near. He is coming your way. Let him in! Whatever it takes, let him in!
