Jesus was teaching one day in the temple courts. He was sitting down, the appropriate position for a teacher in that culture, while the people gathered round. I wonder what the subject of his teaching was? Was it how to become better people? Was he explaining the rituals of the Old Testament? Was he teaching about the end of the world? The people listened to Jesus as to one from whom pearls of wisdom dropped from his lips.
But we will never know what his teaching was that day, because it was interrupted by something much more important. In fact it was interrupted by what, for Jesus, is the most important thing in the world.
A woman caught in the very act of adultery was brought to him (John 8) )and thrown at Jesus’ feet. He didn’t complain about the interruption. He didn’t tell them to get her out of his sight. Instead he simply focused all his attention on this woman and her dreadful situation.
That day, Jesus interrupted his lesson to accept and to forgive this woman into the fullness of his love. He still does that today with me, and with you, and with every sinner who comes to him in need of grace.
As Christians, we have a lot of activities and teachings that are important. But just like Jesus, we should always be willing to put mercy, grace, and forgiveness first. The truth is that rest can wait. It will always be right, if we put first things first.
“Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
“No one, sir,” she said.
“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin” – John 8:10–11
