Jesus said to his disciples, “If two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” (Matt. 18:20)
The Father will do anything for his Son, and Jesus will do anything for his children. Who are his children? They are those who have been justified or made right with God through his blood (Romans 5:9). Would Jesus be found with as few as two or three of his followers? Jesus’ words in verse 20 can also be translated, “Where two or three come together in my name, there I am in their midst.”
Jesus promises to be the centre and nucleus of any gathering of his followers, no matter how small that gathering might be. And if he is the centre of a group, then each person on the circumference would be no further from him, nor any closer to him than anyone else.
Furthermore, no person’s petition would carry any more weight with Jesus, than that of anyone else, for he gives as much attention to the pleas of the rich and esteemed as he does to the pleas of the poor and despised. All his followers are treated equally. There is but one condition that Jesus requires if he is to take your prayers seriously, and that is that you are united in your love for him, and in your requests to him.
How big is your group? If Jesus is there with you, it is the right size.
