Some years ago I was on holiday with my family, and there was a great golf course near where we were staying, so we decided to go and play golf.
None of us actually had played golf before, and I can’t say we really understood the rules – other than that you have to get the ball in the little hole.
We played a full twelve holes, and there was a crowd of people banked up behind us as we took our time making huge scores (You count the number of times you hit the ball, and the person with the highest score wins, right?) Golfers are so polite and patient; no one said anything to us at all.
After we finished our twelve holes, we still had the golf buggy, and we didn’t know what to do with ourselves on the golf course. So we decided to go and look for lost golf balls; after all, there were so many of them in the long grass, and in the sand. And as a whole family we applied ourselves to the task.
We started at the first hole, and it wasn’t until we reached the ninth hole that I noticed that most of the other people on the golf course were also looking for balls. As they stood around scratching their heads, then it hit me. We had been stealing their balls in the middle of their games!
Golfers are so polite and patient, no one said anything to us at all as we revved that golf buggy out of there as fast as we could!
Jesus told a story about a man who sowed wheat in his field. But while he was sleeping, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the good seed.
Then, The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’
‘An enemy did this,’ he replied. – Matt 13:27–28.
We can think that everything is going smoothly in the golf game of life, but we will soon find out that that is not the case. Sooner or later you will realize that someone has been stealing your golf balls, and you won’t know what to do next. That someone is your enemy, the devil.
Unlike for the golfers on the day my family was let loose on the golf course, Jesus’ story has a happy ending. The wheat was all successfully harvested. And there will be a good harvest in your life as well, if you trust in Jesus.
