You Are Loved — Psalm 143:8

You are loved. And that changes everything.

Verse of the Day

Psalm 143:8

“Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.” (Psalm‬ ‭143‬:‭8‬ ‭ESV‬‬)

Okay, context matters.

In this Psalm, David is crying out to the LORD for mercy. In verse one, he acknowledges that no one, including himself, is righteous before God.

That includes you. That includes me. All of us are guilty of rebelling against the rule of the God who gave us life, and breath, and everything! We haven’t loved God wholeheartedly, nor have we loved our neighbour as ourselves.

David is well aware of this in his own life. His list of transgressions is long and infamous.

And so in verse seven, his request is that the LORD would not hide his face from him and send him down to the pit of judgment. Deliver me, O LORD!

His desire, in verse eight, is to hear in the morning of the LORD’S steadfast love.

If there is a God, isn’t that what we all long to hear?

Friend. You ARE loved! And that changes everything.

The good news is — in Jesus, we have the ultimate answer to this prayer from David. Jesus is the only one who lived a perfectly righteous life.

And at the cross, we see the steadfast love of the LORD on display.

At the cross, Jesus has gone down to the pit on our behalf and borne the judgment we deserve for our sin. Incredibly, death could not hold him down; he rose from the dead and offers forgiveness and salvation from judgment.

How do we take hold of this? Check out David’s words: for in you I trust.

Trust. Trust in Jesus. Trust in his life, death, and resurrection. And then entrust yourself to him as he makes known the way you should go.
