Running for Refuge
In the Old Testament (see Numbers 35; Joshua 20), God commanded Israel to set aside cities of refuge. These were safe places where someone guilty of manslaughter could flee. Instead of facing revenge, they could find protection and shelter.
But even those cities of refuge were limited. They only covered unintentional sins. They were temporary solutions for a temporary people.
Hebrews says we who have fled for refuge have something far better. In Christ, we find protection not just from accidents, but from all our sin – intentional and unintentional. In Him we are safe from judgment.
Holding Fast to Hope
Notice the encouragement: those who have fled to Christ for refuge are urged to “hold fast to the hope set before us.” Hope in the Bible isn’t wishful thinking. It’s not “I hope it doesn’t rain tomorrow.” Hope is certain, because it’s grounded in the character of God and the finished work of Jesus.
That means even when the storms rage, you don’t have to let go. Even when everything else feels shaky, you can hold fast, knowing your refuge is secure.
The Gospel Refuge
The gospel is the good news that Jesus is the true city of refuge. In Him, sinners can run and be safe. He has taken our judgment upon Himself through His sacrificial death, and He offers forgiveness and life through His resurrection.
God’s promise to Abraham was that through His family, blessing would come to the nations. That blessing has arrived in Christ. And when you flee to Him, you receive refuge, security, and hope – now and forever.
That means when you run to Jesus, you receive:
- Refuge from the guilt and judgment of your sin.
- Security amid the storms and uncertainties of life.
- Hope that goes beyond the grave into resurrection life with Christ.
Reflection
Heavenly Father, thank you that in Jesus I have found a true refuge from sin, unshakable security amid life’s storms, and a sure hope that reaches beyond the grave. Help me to keep running to Him and holding fast to the hope You set before me. Amen.
