A Body Prepared by God – Hebrews 10:5-10

Hebrews 10:5-10

[5] Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, “Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me; [6] in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. [7] Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’” [8] When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), [9] then he added, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second. [10] And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. (ESV)

What God Always Wanted

God never delighted in endless animal sacrifices. What he wanted was a people who would wholeheartedly obey him. Hearts turned toward him. Lives lived his way.

But since Genesis 3, humanity has walked in rebellion. We’ve failed to love God as God. We’ve failed to love our neighbour as ourselves. We sin in thought, word, and deed.

And so the sacrificial system was necessary—a constant reminder that sin must be dealt with.

The Only Obedient Body

Then Jesus came. Verse 5 quotes Psalm 40, putting these words on his lips: “A body have you prepared for me.”

This isn’t just about Jesus’ physical body. It’s about his entire life—every thought, every word, every deed given over to the will of God.

Jesus is the only one who walked in perfect obedience. The only body not riddled with sin. The only one of whom it can be said: he was without sin. Jesus is the only one who can honestly say, “I have come to do your will, O God.” (Hebrews 10:7)

And that perfect body was offered as a sacrifice, once for all.

Sanctified by His Will

Verse 10: “By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”

Jesus’ obedience makes our obedience possible. His perfect life makes our imperfect lives acceptable to God.

The Good News is…

The good news is that God’s demand for obedience has been met—not by you, but by Jesus. Through his body offered willingly, you are sanctified. Made holy. Set apart for God. Not because of your obedience, but because of his.

Reflection

Heavenly Father, thank you for sending Jesus to do what I could never do—to live in perfect obedience and offer himself willingly for me. Help me to walk in the obedience his sacrifice has made possible. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
