The Lord Will Provide – Genesis 22:14

Isaac asked his father a heartbreaking question on the way up the mountain. Abraham’s answer still echoes today: the Lord will provide.

“Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh (which means ‘the LORD will provide’). To this day, people still use that name as a proverb: ‘On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.’

As we continue our journey through Scripture seeking to see Jesus more clearly, we come to one of the most moving stories in all the Bible — Abraham taking his beloved son Isaac up Mount Moriah to offer a sacrifice to God.

Isaac was Abraham and Sarah’s promised son, the child through whom God had declared that all the nations of the earth would be blessed. Abraham must have been deeply confused when God asked him to offer Isaac as a sacrifice. Yet, trusting in God’s goodness and faithfulness, Abraham obeyed and set out on the journey in faith.

As father and son walked together up the mountain, Isaac asked a heartbreaking question: “Where is the sheep for the burnt offering?” Abraham replied with words that echo throughout the rest of Scripture: “God will provide a sheep for the burnt offering, my son.”

At the last moment, God intervened. Calling out to Abraham to stop, He said, “Now I know that you truly fear God. You have not withheld from me even your son, your only son.” Looking up, Abraham saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket, and he offered it as a substitute sacrifice in Isaac’s place.

The Good News is…

What an extraordinary foreshadowing of the gospel — the good news about Jesus Christ. Just as Isaac, the beloved son, carried the wood for the sacrifice, so Jesus, the beloved Son of God, would one day carry His cross. And just as God provided a substitute for Isaac, He has provided a substitute for us. Jesus took our place so that we might go free. God indeed provided the Lamb — “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).

The story of Isaac on Mount Moriah reminds us that God is neither distant nor indifferent to our deepest need. He sees our helpless condition under sin and the sentence of death, and He Himself provides the remedy. Through Jesus, God has made a way for us to live.

Yahweh-Yireh — the Lord will provide. On Mount Moriah, Abraham discovered that God provides what He requires. And the good news is, at Calvary, the whole world discovered just how far that provision would go.
