Do not oppress and alien; you yourselves know how it feels to be aliens, because you were aliens in the land of Egypt.
Exodus 23:9

How did that make you feel? It seems to be a required question for journalists to ask as they dig for a story that will rate on prime-time news.  It’s understandable though, because that which is of ‘human interest’ is always that which is closest to our feelings. There’s no doubt that they (our feelings) are highly wrought and we seem to take it for granted that they matter a great deal.  The highest ethical systems known center on the idea that we ought to be careful how we treat others because they believe in their own dignity just like us; they are aggrieved like we are if that dignity is disrespected.  I know I feel alienated sometimes. I am frequently vulnerable, and I feel very wronged if anyone takes advantage of me in my weakness. God make me a friend to the alien.
