“There the wicked cease from turmoil and there the weary find rest . . . . The small and great are there and the slave is freed from his master.” (Job 3:17-19).
This is a slogan for death, not a motto to live by. But that does not mean it is false. There is enough truth here to cause most adults to nod gravely; as if to say, “just so.” Life is wearying, testing, unfair and hurtful for everyone on the planet. For the oppressed, pain-wracked and broken hearted, death is a welcome friend. But those who trust in God know who to thank. God is a kindness on God’s part that we do not live very long.
