“‘Stop wailing,’ Jesus said. ‘She is not dead but asleep.’ They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead” (Luke 8:52-53).
These professional mourners had seen many dead bodies and weren’t fooled by Jesus’ words. The girl was dead; both her breathing and her heart had stopped.
But Jesus was teaching them something very, very important. God in the flesh had come to the world to conquer man’s ultimate enemy, death.
Death wasn’t the ultimate ruler, God was. Death was about to become a defeated kingdom because Jesus through his own death, was about to open the door to Satan’s dungeon to set his captives free (Heb. 2:14-15).
