This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile … And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace (Romans 3:22; Ephesians 2:8-9).
Many people try to express the most important conclusion of life in terms of a mathematical equation.
Salvation = X + Y, where X = My Perfection and Y = The Righteousness of Christ.
They talk about how wonderful it is that Christ makes up the difference between their character and his perfection. But it doesn’t work this way. The great truth of the gospel is often the hardest lesson to learn.
Salvation = Y + 0, where Y = the righteousness of Christ and 0 = nothing else!
The reason this lesson is so difficult to learn comes from within us. This is because our fallen sinful natures will rage against the beauty and simplicity of the gospel They will tell us that it cannot be so simple, that we can and must contribute to our salvation.
For most of us, our greatest and most constant battle is to understand the depths of our sinfulness, because when we do that, we can come to a total dependence on Christ. Then, his Spirit will come into your life and bless it with healing, power and service for the kingdom of God.
