“I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life” (John 5:24).

Here is the great truth of salvation: No matter what your past has been, no matter how deep you have fallen into sin, if you put your trust in the Lord you will not be condemned but shall receive instead the free gift of eternal life. The very moment you do that, you cross over “from death to life”. You are now a citizen of Heaven, even while you still live in this world. Because you are living a life of faith in Jesus, you have a foretaste of the powers of the world to come.

Jesus is making a wonderful promise to everyone who accepts his offer. But he is also proclaiming his power as God; it is his ultimate claim, delivered with the voice of authority and supreme confidence. And this is the core of your relationship with Christ.

The other great truth is that without this salvation, there is no hope, and the future is all darkness. When you believe, the light of the gospel will flood your life.
