“A time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear the voice of the Son of Man and come out—those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned” (John 5:28-29).
This would be a very scary statement if it weren’t for the gospel. If we’re honest with ourselves, none of us are good enough to meet God’s perfect standard. We all fall short a thousand times every day, no matter how hard we try. But the gospel is for everyone who isn’t good enough to be saved – and that is every person who ever lived.
We are not saved by our good works and we are not lost because of the evil we have done. This is the good news of the gospel. We are saved by the perfection of Jesus Christ, who stands in our place. We simply need to permit him to stand in our place and salvation is ours.
However, if we are saved, it is because we have Christ (1 John 5:11-12), and his righteousness saves us. If we have Christ we will do good works. On the other hand, those who are lost do evil because they don’t have Christ.
