The women’s testimony about Jesus’ resurrection “seemed to [the apostles] to be like nonsense” (Luke 24:11).
Not only was the testimony of women considered unreliable in those times, on this occasion it was so ‘over the top’, it seemed to the apostles to be utter nonsense. William Barclay tells us that the original word used to describe the women’s behavious is one “employed by Greek medical writers to describe the babbling of a fevered and insane mind.”
Most new discoveries seem somewhat crazy at first, but this new discovery of a ‘living dead man’ was the most bizarre they had ever encountered. Nevertheless it was true. Jesus had risen from the dead as “the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep” (1 Cor. 15:20). He did not just give us a recipe for successful living, then disappear into the grave. He is not just an example of how to live a godly life. His sacrifice means we can stand perfect before God and receive the gift of salvation.
Because he rose from the dead, we also shall rise up to eternal life.
