Weekly Blog: Jesus is Better

Jesus is better! I love the book of Hebrews! It’s up there among my favourite books of the Bible. And here’s why: because it’s all about Jesus.
Lots of people get the book of Hebrews all wrong. They think it is about the temple, or Jewish rituals or complex theology. Not really. It really is all about Jesus!
Hebrews was written at a time when those people who had known Jesus in person while he walked among us were starting to pass away. People were starting to wonder whether they had actually spoken the truth, and whether Jesus was as good as they had said he was.
The book of Hebrews has a really simple message. Here it is. You’ll love it: “Jesus is better!” He is better than anything else! That’s it, and that’s why I love the book of Hebrews.
How Jesus is Better in the Book of Hebrews
In Hebrews 1 we are told that there have been many who have revealed God’s will, including angels, but Jesus is the ultimate revelation of God, and he is better even than the angels (1:4).
In Hebrews 2 we are told that Jesus is a part of, and better than anyone else of, the human family.
In Hebrews 3 we are told that Jesus is a better leader than Moses, or any of the prophets.
In Hebrews 4 we are told that Jesus leads us somewhere that Moses could never take his people. Jesus offers us a better rest, because it is the rest of salvation.
In Hebrews 5 we are told that Jesus is a better High Priest.
The book of Hebrews has a really simple message. “Jesus is better!”
In Hebrews 6:19 we are told that because Jesus is a better High Priest, he gives us “better things,” that are associated with salvation.
In Hebrews 7 we are told that among these better things, Jesus gives us better blessings, because he has given us a better hope (v.19).
In Hebrews 8 we are told that as a better High Priest, Jesus is the mediator of a better covenant, which is based on better promises (v.6).
Jesus is better than anything you can even imagine!
In Hebrews 9 we are told that this better covenant is based on a better sacrifice (v.23).
In Hebrews 10 we are told that out of all the things we can possess, heaven is better (v.34).
In Hebrews 11 we are told that those who possess heaven obtain a better resurrection (v.35). Whatever we have in this life, God has planned something better for us (v.40).
In Hebrews 12 we are told that God has provided a better mountain for us than Mt Sinai. He has provided Mt Zion, the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God, to be our true home (v.22). This is all possible because the blood of Christ is better than any blood that has ever been shed before (v.24.)
