Whether you are optimistic or pessimistic about life and the future has much, if not everything to do with what you believe about how things end up. I am not optimistic because I believe this world is getting better, nor do I believe that it will get better. I am optimistic because I believe the end story of the Bible – that Jesus will come back victorious.
The longer I am a Christian, and the more that I have grown to know the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the more of an unstoppable optimist I have become. That blessed assurance that Jesus is mine, that certainty that “we have not followed cunningly devised fables…” (2 Peter, 1:16), that living hope of a glorious future where there shall be no more tears, no more sorrow, no more pain, no more death… in fact with each moment that ticks by, our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.
Knowing that Jesus is King and that He died for me, knowing that He rose from the dead, broke the power of death and bought your and my eternity, changes the worst of pessimists into die-hard optimists. Jesus has a place prepared for you, just as He promised – “I go and prepare a place for you…” (Jn. 14:2)
Grabbing onto the eternal perspective on life is a sure-fire way to overcome fear of the future and become an eternal optimist. This is the good news that we bring!
