Unlimited: Baptized into His Death

We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? (Romans 6:2b–3).

To be “baptized” literally means to be “immersed.” There is a deep and mysterious spiritual meaning here. The person who has accepted Jesus Christ has been “immersed” into his death. They are under the Cross.

Paul is responding to the completely unacceptable idea that whether you sin or not no longer matters. The apostle Paul is explaining that those who are under grace cannot simply continue sinning as they did before.

We “have died to sin” by virtue of having been baptized into the death of Christ Jesus.

Paul argues that we “have died to sin” by virtue of having been baptized into the death of Christ Jesus. We have therefore been released from the reign of sin in our lives by Christ. We will no longer live in sin, but in Him. Through Jesus, we have been brought into his kingdom of righteousness. Now his grace reigns in our lives.

What does it mean to live in sin? It means to be a slave to sin so that you allow sin to determine the course of your life. It means be subject to every prompting of sin in your life.

For those who have been baptized into Christ, it is true that sin does not reign, but it does remain. Before, sin didn’t matter, but now, for those who are under the Cross, sin matters all the more! We cannot live in it any longer!

Spiritual Application

I know that you are a sinner, and that therefore you sin. You stumble and fall many times. The reason why I know that is because you are just like me. Set some time aside to meditate on this question: “How has Christ freed me from living in sin?”
